Recovering A Dining Room Chair
Dining room chairs are often the most used pieces of furniture in a home. They get a lot of wear and tear, and over time, the upholstery can become worn, torn, or stained. If your dining room chairs are looking a little worse for wear, don't despair. It is possible to recover them yourself with a little time and effort.
Tools and materials you will need:
- New upholstery fabric
- Upholstery foam (optional)
- Upholstery tacks
- Hammer
- Scissors
- Upholstery needle
- Thread
- Screwdriver (if necessary)
Instructions:
- Remove the old upholstery. Start by removing the seat cushion from the chair. Then, carefully remove the old fabric from the seat and back of the chair. Be sure to remove all of the old tacks and staples.
- Inspect the chair frame. Once the old upholstery is removed, take a close look at the chair frame. If there are any loose joints or broken pieces, repair them before continuing.
- Add upholstery foam (optional). If the chair seat is too hard or uncomfortable, you can add a layer of upholstery foam for extra cushioning. Cut the foam to the size of the seat and place it on top of the frame.
- Cut the new fabric. Cut the new upholstery fabric to the size of the seat and back of the chair. Be sure to allow for enough fabric to wrap around the edges and staple it to the frame.
- Upholster the seat. Center the fabric on the seat and staple it to the frame. Start by stapling the fabric in the center of each side. Then, work your way around the edges, pulling the fabric taut as you go. Trim any excess fabric around the edges.
- Upholster the back. Upholster the back of the chair in the same manner as the seat. Center the fabric on the back and staple it to the frame. Start by stapling the fabric in the center of each side. Then, work your way around the edges, pulling the fabric taut as you go. Trim any excess fabric around the edges.
- Reassemble the chair. Once the seat and back are upholstered, reassemble the chair. If the chair has any screws or bolts, tighten them securely.
Tips:
- Choose a fabric that is durable and easy to clean.
- If you are new to upholstery, practice on an old chair before attempting to recover your dining room chairs.
- Take your time and do not be afraid to ask for help if needed.
